For several years we have implemented the local Aboriginal language, Wajarri into the curriculum. Ms Roberts our LOTE teacher has undertaken two years of training and qualifications to be a recognised LOTE teacher, who has been teaching Years 3-7 about Aboriginal culture and Wajarri.
In 2011 we aim to introduce Indonesian into the senior years, to allow students to learn Indonesian and develop their awareness of Asian language and culture. This can be carried into their high school years through a commitment from John Willcock College and Geraldton Senior College.
Waggrakine PS has joined together with Allendale PS, Bluff Point PS and John Willcock College to form an Indonesian Language Hub. Our endeavours in this area have been recognised by the Asia Education Foundation through the success of two recent grant applications. The NALSSP
, Becoming Asia Literate: Grants to Schools have recognised the team work between the four schools and granted a $40 000 NALSSP grant and a $100 000 Indonesian Hub grant to begin an Indonesian Language Hub.
